TFHell on the iPhone

TFL icon

I love the TFL website! It does an amazing job of find a route from A to B around London, using the various different forms of transport. However the site massively fails when I need it most!

I normally use the TFL site to plan a route, but by the time I'm out of the door I have totally forgotten what bus/tube stop I was meant to be going to, and in a world where no one has printers anymore I find myself trying to find the route again though my iPhone.

However this is where the TFL site has a massive FAIL, somehow it manages to choke mobile Safari, even when connected via WiFi. It's hard to tell the exact reason for this, it could be the large amount of JavaScript used by the site, it's use of XSLT, large amounts of POST data or something far simpler (post a comment if you know).

This causes the site to be useless when on the road. I used it last night, but by the time I got a result back I hard realised I was on the wrong bus and started to walk...

Until someone makes an iPhone version of the site, or better yet a native application you can use the, "large text version" which appears to be void of any styling or unnecessary content.

I have uploaded a web clip sized tfl icon you can use to put a link on your iPhone's home screen, by using the iphone bookmarklet we created a while back.

Sprout Core

Earlier today I was reading an article about Sprout Core which is billed as Cocoa for the web. The idea being that cocoa developers can use a software development approach to creating web applications. This is similar to Adobe’s Flex, or Microsoft’s Silverlight, but rather than generating a swf or silverlight file, it produces HTML [...]

Skinning Scrollbars in Flex 3

Skinning in Flex 3 can be a bit of a nightmare as there is no code complete for CSS and it’s often very hard to find documentation. I ran into a small problem when wanting to create an Apple esq scroll bar for a data grid, firstly you have to apply scale-9 skinning to the thumb [...]

Microformats hcard HTML

Microformat’s are great, and enable us to add even better semantics to our HTML. Using browser plugins we are starting to see the start of what is possible, Operator 0.9.2 offers fantastic functionality in Firefox, and hopefully we will soon see more main stream implementations by the browser manufacturers. Ideally an IE plugin, but also something [...]
