UI Navigation question

Question to ponder over the weekend.

You have a list of articles that scroll vertically in a desktop app.

When you click on an article to view in full you have navigation arrows to go to the next and previous article.

Do the buttons point up and down, to mimic scrolling on the previous screen?

Do they point left and right like iTunes which also displays songs vertically?

Answers on a post card.

without a doubt, up and down.
that’s the most legitimate… don’t get fooled by far too many inconsistencies like this floating around.

back button could offer a “<” left arrow and navigating articles should continue to offer the up and down behavior introduced by the list.
introducing some slide effect from the list to detail view could enforce the idea that the left arrow brings you back to the list.

I thought the same, but most people thought that the left and right was correct.

I guess it’s a hard one, perhaps top left and bottom right is the way to go ;)
