Customer Care the Apple way

AppleCare2

A few days ago, my iPhone became convinced the headphones were connected all the time... This meant that you couldn't answer calls normally or use the phones speakers, as all sound was going out through the headphone socket. I know suspect something was stuck in the headphone socket, something I guess isn't really a design fault, as there isn't much you can do about protecting the port....

So I booked a place at the Genius bar to see if there was anything they could do to fix my phone, worried that I may be without a phone for a while if they sent it off. Something that happened to my girlfriends second broken LG Shine, which lasted about 2 weeks! The prospect of another 15 months without an iPhone was also a concern!

Anyway I turned up early and did some work on my Mac Book while I waited (mobile office FTW), before my appointment with someone that had obviously had training on the hardware (rather than someone that knew as much about it as one of my parents, but pretended to be an expert). After trying some software resets, I was promptly given a new phone, with a quick sync to my laptop I had everything back, right down to my recent calls, and text messages... something that has never happened with other phones I've owned. All done, and I was on my way... new phone, no hassle! None of the normal conflict where the phone shop tells you to call the carrier, who tells you to call the manufacture and you end up with weeks of strees, I was sorted in about 10 minutes!

It certainly made me glad I didn't jailbreak the phone, and made every penny of the extravagance instantly worth it.... and not a mention of pesky insurance in sight!

I also purchased a TimeCapsule.... will review it soon, but it's a great piece of kit for anyone who wants a really easy back up solution and 802.11n wireless network super speed!

  1. yeh, I went to that shop with a broken iPod once. Of course, the thing worked fine when I got there, and the lady asked me to show her what the fault was if I wanted a new one. Luckily for me she then turned away to talk to a collegue & I managed to press the buttons in the right order to reboot it. She turned back & I said - 'look - it just rebooted itself.' I walked out with a spanky new ipod too. shveet!
  2. Lol nice work Chris! Although I am not sure what I would have done before the Apple stores were about!
  3. My experience in general is that the Apple stores and AppleCare is quit good! I've a few unsatisfactory experiences with AppleCare but overall excellent stuff.
  4. I was in the Apple Store to get a new battery for my MBP. The guy in front of me had an iPhone that was having some issues. The Apple Store employee said, "Well, we usually don't do this...because, I can't seem to find anything wrong with your iPhone. But I see you came in before for the same issue, so I'm going to give you the benefit of doubt." He opened up a drawer, pulled out a new iPhone, and said, "Unfortunately, you might lose some information, but just sync it up, and you'll be all set." The guy walked out with a brand new iPhone! I was pretty shocked, to say the least. Also, my MacBook Pro got a new battery with little hassle. :D
  5. I guess they want to keep the vibe around the iPhone positive, and they certainly got my vote! My old powerbooks battery broke a while ago, I didn't even think to take it into Apple, I just got a new one! Doh!
  6. I just had an issue with my MBP not reading CD's. I called AppleCare on Monday, they sent a box on Tuesday, I sent the box back on Wednesday, they fixed the MBP on Thursday, and sent it back on Friday. Within 48 hours I had my laptop back and working. I am quite impressed and feel like calling someone to report the fantastic response.
  7. Apple's official line on the speaker/headphones issue you describe is to take your headphones jack and plunge them into the headphones socket in a sturdy fashion 5 or 6 times which will dislodge the dust or lint that has caused the problem. Worked for me!
  8. Thanks mj, this had worked for me in the past, although it didn't work this time, not even for the guy in the shop.
