What the iPod range should be

iPod range should be

Last night I twittered that the iPod range has become too diverse and confusing, and Apple may be heading down the same road as Nokia did in loosing their market dominance.

No longer will you be able to say have you got the latest iPod, or know how to use an iPod. Instead people will be confused about which ones are new and the differences between them meaning less hype when a new one is released. They will no longer become iconic.

My mock up above shows how it should be. A shuffle, a nano (small flash iPod), an iPod (with touch coming in both flash and hard drive flavours).

I really don't understand why there is a classic any more. It serves no purpose other than being the only way to have an iPod with a lot of storage space...

Why not leave your own!

  1. I completely agree! I think that apples product direction is starting to be pushed too much by the consumers demand. It’s as if the Apple blogs out there decided that widescreen touch iPods are the next thing and so Apple felt pressurised to create one. In my view the iPod touch / iPod classic should be one product and Apple shouldn’t feel pressurised to release a touch screen interface until the technology is mature enough to allow a decent storage capacity and battery life…
  2. Hear hear! Apple are where they are by not listening bloggers but understanding users. They didn't release video ipods till it made sense. This feels like a rush in order to get stuff out before they were ready.
  3. I'm not happy about the little dig at Nokia there, any company willing to go back to the incredibly successful NGage brand clearly knows what they're doing.
  4. I didn't even know they were venturing back into that territory! There is clearly a market for games on mobiles. But I see it as more of a runtime and service that device!
