dark side of social media

Last night I attended the latest Chinwag live even, Dark side of social media. You can listen to the podcast here.

The event was really interesting and seemed to highlight a few interesting points, such as, really this is nothing new, it's just a new medium for the same old stuff.

The solution people came up with were that you either use a bit of common sense, and realise that anyone may be able to see what your posting and therefore don't post up anything damaging about yourself, or use a sock puppet, an alternative persona or alias like many authors have been doing for years.

The other option is that we cut each other some slack, and perhaps this is something that will come when the myspace generation are employers, because everyone has had embarrassing moments, it's just easier to find them now.

Congrats to Chinwag for another cracking event!

  1. Sounds interesting. I hadn't heard the term sock puppet for an alternative identity before. Must be the season for it though, as Warren Ellis used "fictionsuit" to describe it recently as well.
  2. Glad you enjoyed the event. It was pretty wide randing and it's a shame we couldn't go into more detail, but then I saw quite a few whistful glances in the direction of the bar. Interestingly on the sockpuppet front, Mike Butcher's just blogged about a new law which'll make it illegal for UK companies to do this in future: http://mbites.com/2007/06/20/its_all_over_for_the_astroturfers Hope to see you at the next one.
  3. Look forward to it Sam! Next stop for myself though is LFPUG tomorrow :)
