My Xbox 360 cd drive died

I'm not feeling too well at the moment, so I was settling down to some GRAW2 online when a god awful noise start coming from somewhere in the room. Initially I thought it was the TV spitting out some interference, but then I noticed it was coming from my Xbox 360.
It honestly sounded like an angel grinder, so I quickly turned it off, only to find that it now won't read any disks, and makes very loud clunking noises when I put one in. I have tried turning it on it's side, different disks reboots... everything I can think of but with no joy.
So now I am on hold trying to contact the Xbox 360 customer support line... joy. Shoddy shoddy Microsoft.... especially when I have only had it about 3 months and played on it a relatively small amount of times.
UPDATE:
So I finally got through to customer support and they are sending me some stickers.... for UPS to send it in. I then have to arrange a pick up and can expect to get it back in 3 weeks!!!!
I remember I had a similar problem with my launch PS2 (you can expect the odd problem from launch machines) and Sony sent a new one to my house for me to swap with my old one, no waiting 3 weeks for repair! I also had a problem with an Apple battery which they just sent me a new one for... I didn't even have to send the old one back... poor service really for such a big company like Microsoft (not even an apology over the phone mite I add!).

- My son's just died... won't read disks. I didn't call yet, but the 3 year extension is only for 3 flashing lights on front. My son told me he saw that problem months ago but it didn't effect play (great). Oh well, we'll see what happens. Maybe they should get out of the Hardware business ? (too? ;) )
- i am in the uk right now and my disk drive just crashed and its right after i just after i just installed the latest update. it makes the same angel grinding noise. dont know what to do all the way from over here. isnt there a way to fix this?

- My turn around time was about 3 weeks. That was here in the UK though :( They should really pay for a rental of another 360 while you wait, or swap it with a new one at your door Sony did with my PS2 back in the day!

- I finished getting 1000 gamerpoints in halo 3 and guess what... im welcomed to the club.. grinding noises and now the 360 wont read any of my disks... yeeeeeeea thats nice wait for ups to bring the box wich takes a month.. then ship it to microsoft....then ship it back.... takes more than a month. - You should be able to take your hard drive off Sebas! Then you won't loose any saves etc. However with your game points they are stored online with your gamer tag, so you should be fine anyway. Make sure they give you a month Xbox live free too!
- 8 weeks ago my dvd drive died, i sent it off to microsoft and after 3 weeks i got back back with a brand new dvd drive, me = wow. Yesterday i got my Halo 3 and i went to play and guess what ? welcoem me to the club. Grinding noises. Funny is that i had got my dvddrive replaced by microsoft just 8 weeks ago. I called today and wait for the ups guy to bring the sticker with him that i send it off again. this is bullshit isnt it ?
- I just had my second 360 go out on me tonight the first one had the red lights this one makes a grinding noise and won't play any discs just like the OPs. I pretty much hate Microsoft at this point. No more halo 3 for me for at least three weeks. honestly if I didn't like Halo 3 so much I would be smashing my current console to dust and never bother with microsofts POS machine again.

- I had my 360 for just under 2 years now...my xbox started making grinding noises in the vertical position, I was freaked out by it do i turned it off. Started it back up, it said it couldn't read the disk...tried horizontal, its still didn't read the disk and kept grinding. Those who had these problems, how much did it cost to get it fixed. Is it covered under warrenty being as old as mine?
- Your best bet is to contact Microsoft and see. As it's such a common problem, they may fix it despite the fact it's quite old!
- Playing having a good time and then my 360 starts grinding like a chainsaw. Called MS and off it will be going. I'm confused... didn't MS even have any type of quality control testing on these things? This is unacceptable.
- Tonight I was playing Lego Star Wars (like a real man) and about 20 minutes in all hell breaks loose. A horrifying grinding noise starts pouring out of my 360. I rush over and eject the disc and no scratches. Thinking maybe it had just slipped off the tray a little, I dared try again. Same thing. Tried a cheapo game, same thing. Tried standing it vertical, same thing. So I call MS. As expected I'm greeted by broken English. But in fairness the woman I spoke with was friendly and gave no resistance. I was told the box (coffin) was on its way with a shipping label and all repairs would be covered. The drawback is the 4 week turnaround. I was also told I would receive 1 whopping month of XBOX Live Gold, which is just a mind-job considering I'm losing a month during the repair process anyways. But considering the situation I'm in, I wasn't even remotely interested in haggling. I'm just hoping they dont do an auto mechanics special on me; fix one thing and break another. Lastly, I'm doubtful that any particular game could cause a hardware malfunction that would cause it to physically break short of it being manufactured fragily, causing it to break under high speeds and tossing shrapnel throughout. The particular game I was playing had already logged over 30 hours on. Good luck with your repairs
- oh well please welcome me with open arms as i'm a little annoyed. mine went tits up today hadn't played it 2 days and unplayable disc and it won't read anything. e-mailed bill gates well microsoft but still pee'd off. i think it's time to kill bill. i hope to god they don't try and charge me!
- Call 1-800-4MY-XBOX to start a repair order. Since my posting I have shipped my Elite out in the "coffin" Microsoft sent me. I also bought a new Pro console with the Falcon chipset. When my Elite returns I'm going to eBay it.
- Wow!!! That is all I have to say. This is also my second 360. I had the Ring of death about 6 or so months ago. Worked through support and shipped it out. FYI for those of you that have an older XBOX search the net for the annoucement that MS sent out about extending warranty. Repeat this to support and they should service the box. Anyways.... I thought cool I got a brand new 360 with a build date in 06. Thought I was home free :( WRONG I got the angle grinder late one night rocking out to Guitar Hero. For me I use it as an extender and thought it was heat or over usage. Not now it seems like all CD's will not read cold or hot.
- yeah blah blah blah same problem. i as playin pdz yesterday and all of a suddin it was doin that angel gride noise, so i took out the game and it was scratched the fuck up. now the 360 wont read any disk at all. any suggestions besides sending it in? could i just bang it arround a bit?
- My 360 dvd drive died. Move the Xbox, put in a game, grinding noise and opening the tray up did not relieve the problem. The drive won't stay shut sometimes and when it does stay shut it grinds and will not read any disk. I passed the warranty date last month and now they told me I have to pay to get it fixed. Any real suggestions as what to do?

- me again...if you wanna better feel my situation, you can read my other comment posted earlier above (on October 16, 2007)....after the guy came and picked it up, i took mine back in 2-3 weeks and the dvd drive was replaced with a new one and i was (*_*) happy. Just 3 nights ago i was playing Kane&Lynch and nooooo... it froze up... tried with different ganes samething... it froze up after like 2 minutes of gameplay...i waited that night and i hoped the next day its ganna be fine but nope...still the same.. i called the Microsoft and asked the guy ' why does it break over and over and over and over again ??????'... anyway.. they pcked it up last week.. i am going to buy a Ps3.. well, i never wanted to but xbox360 made me doing it...
- Hi Frost. Getting a PS3 doesn't sound like too much of a bad idea! Once all the games are coming out on both, and the PS3 has some good exclusives it may be a good time to switch.

- Heh. I found this while at work today after my dvd drive went tits up on Xmas eve as well. I bought it almost an exact month ago, and figured I was home free with it being a Falcon and all. Oh well. Heres hoping TF2 and CoD4 on PC will tide me over. I miss the old days of consoles like Nintendo and Sega could make which just could not be killed. I feel like I need a pillow to rest thing on or it will get cranky and go into a coma again.
- So I noticed a faint grinding noise a few weeks ago coming out of my console. Didn't think anything of it as it went away. Just got COD4 on christmas eve and was all pumped up to play it. A few levels into the game I hear the grinding noise coming from the drive. I pulled the game out only to find a ring had been etched into the disc. Funny cause the disc still reads fine, and you can play the game. But the grinding noise is getting worse and it will just continue to scratch the game. I emailed tech support and the guy had the effing balls to tell me it was my fan turning on!!!! Are you $(*#^*#^$*#^$* kidding me! I emailed him back, pretty much telling him he was a flipping retard in a nice way, and his response back was to inform me how the drive spins are 12x to read the disc faster! WTF!? So anyways, I'm calling MS when I get home from work and demanding that it be sent it for repair and warranty, as the console is 3 months old! and if not, i'm taking this thing to the shooting range, using it as a target, and dumping a 30rd mag of 5.56 into it. And then I'm buying a PS3.
- Same Problem hear Started making grinding noise with gears of war till itgot stress crack and wont work. Halo 3 also mint condition game, then made noise then isee stress cracks and now a coaster. I have my xbox in standing position
- This is my second entry. I called support and they said no joy out of warranty. Tried using the "microsoft extended it so fix it" but they wouldn't budge. Said the extension was for the ring of death only. I did try that fix listed above from youtube but my issue wasn't the magnet being stuck to the top. Mine was still in its regular position on the spindle. So I am not sure what the fix is. There was another fix on youtube but I have not tried. This fix is to add spacers to the top spindle possibly creating more pressure. I am guessing that this is an issue with how fast the CD is spinning. I can play most all my original xbox games with no issue and movies too. But as soon as I put in a new 360 game it grinds. Like they spin at a faster RPM and thats what's throwing it off. Don' t know. Well if anyone has a good fix for issue not relating to the detached magnet from spindle please let me know.
- Matt, I hate to say it but you may have to end up paying to have it fixed. Which is garbage considering how much these consoles cost. You think MS would stand more behind their product. Well I figured I would keep everyone updated. I called MS the other day and to my surpise the individual who I spoke to on the phone was very friendly, we ended up even cracking jokes and having a good laugh. But anyways, like everyone else the prepaid shipping box is on its way. Luckily the console is 3 months old and under warranty. They even said if the techs cant fix it within ten days that a new replacement console would be sent out. It's somewhat sucks not being able to play for a few weeks but as long as it gets fixed I'm not going to complain. Hopefully this is the first and last time I have to send this thing in for repair (knock on wood)

- my xbox wont read any discs i get about 5 10 miniutes max of game play time and den it will say it cant read disc i no its not the cds because theres not a scratch finger print or anything on them but theres no grinding noise but ther is no waranty on my 360 what shud i do :( ?
- Pay to get it fixed through MS, then once you get it back, eBay it. You might net $100. Better than having a giant paperweight.
- Well welcome me to the club. My 360 started clunking (or what ever you can all it) it reads some discs, but not others. Now my saints row, has got a clean circle scratch! Couldn't of done the circle better myself. Just got off the phone to Xbox, and because myn is out of warranty they want £60 for it to be fixed. £60? Haven't they got enough fucking money, and enough people having the same issue. This is just as bad as the red lights. He said "We understand this issue, and have had numerous calls over it" Well fucking sort it then, you made the console not out problem. Sorry about my french just a little ticked over it. Not sure what to do. I haven't got the £60 at the moment, I got a 2 month old baby he comes first. Well I've had my banter. P.S. Just to confirm I'm not the Matt up above. - XBOX 360 Elite CD drive freaked me out last night playing Assasins Creed - horrible noise and then dead. Coffin on it's way. This is my second XBOX. I really wish MS would 'get it' that a month with no console really drives people to other systems. I have my Wii still, but I use the XBOX as my DVD player, so no movie nights for me and the wifey for a while. And my new TV gets here this week too. grrrrrr. Send a replacement MS, then we'll ship the dead hardware back like every other electronics manufacturer in the world does.
- Join me in, My 360 well my brothers and mine... In a way broke recently a few days ago. Funny thing is it always made the grinding noise ;) But never hurt anything and it worked fine. Unbelievebly my 360 is two years old considering Microsoft doesn't make the best conseles. My warrenty was up four months ago. What a B**** My consele was starting show only shades of green when I played my games. Which sucked since I was having a hell of a time playing in a online match on H3, I had talked to someone about it.( Not tech support most of the people that answer don't even know what the hell they're talking about.) They said oh no worries just dust the light that scans the disk. Well it didn't work. My 360 just went poof in the middle of playing it. It just seriously died. No I don't have the ring of death. I would take my 360 apart and fix whatever is wrong with it but my brother is too much of a little prick to even want to try anything. I called microsoft , and they're shitty tech support. Got this azn guy( No offence to Azn ) that couldn't even pronouce words right, on top of that he talked way too fast. He offered One hundred and ninety nine dollars to fix my 360. I was like What the f*** are you talking about one hundred and ninety nine dollars?!? Other people got offered freagin a hundred and fifty. ( If any of you noticed they charge 149$ plus tax. Aderh but to the point they're charging you half the price of the godamn consele!)The guy was like "well , we will pay for the shipping." Its basicly one hundred and ninety dollars to buy a used 360 sad thing is I just bought a ps3, Freagin some games for the ps3, two games for the wii and like one for the 360. So now I have to money to buy a new 360 , My brother lost the card I bought for a whole another year long subcribtion of XBl. I'm such in a pissey mood my 360 breaks right after I get home when I'm broke( my fault XD), I would sell my gamecube , xbox , and ps2. but they all have defects, so I'll just save up for a used 360. Hopefully my grandpa will just buy it for me. I've sent my 360 in before which I don't get why they tolds us when we got it back we had a two year warrenty , then tell us our one year just went up.

- Well microsoft claims they've repaired or replaced my console and is currently being fedex'ed back to me, should be delivered on wednesday. I can only hope they did what they said they were going to do. And Sammy, you definately got screwed buddy, sorry to hear that happened to you. I wouldn't pay $100 to have a console fixed. I'd either go out and buy another one, or do like Rob said and see if you can find a private repair shop that's familiar with these consoles. If not, tell your brother to quit being a fag and open the thing up yourself. You may be able to visually see whats wrong with it and rig something up yourself to correct it.
- I had the same problem a few back while playing COD 4. But I didn't have ANY issues with my system until today. I tried to play a nice game of COD 4 and my drive tells me to OPEN TRAY! WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!!!!!! Now I'm screwed, can't play the games I want, and stuck with a crappy PSP with PS 1 graphics. I could've saved money just buying a HDTV after Christmas. I am highly pissed and stuck on hold with XBL. So from other posts, I have to wait on a sticker +3weeks of them working on my system?

- Im a part of the club also.... griding noise and put some nice scratch marks around the disc.for me its a whole lot harder for me to take my xbox in and give money away if its not fixable. Knowing the warranty was well out of range i cracked into it and started lookin for the obvious problems and found a magnet which holds the disc in place while it spins had unglued itself from the casing (the case that surrounds the actual drive) i reglued the magnet onto the motor and havnt had problems for several months but recently ran into a new problem when playing COD4 on xbox live. At the end of every round the xbox will give me the disc unreadable error and i reboot and retry and play a round and happens again...microsoft is screwed i would almost go with PS3 if xbox live wasnt so damn good
- I'm the newest member of the club. Got Rock Band over the weekend, and started hearing it grinding, but the game still played fine (for the most part). Today, it started getting louder until eventually the DVD drive won't even close. No matter what game I put in, it'll close the tray then eject immediately. Xbox support says I have to pay $100 to fix it. Fuck that... They only cover it if it's got three red lights. I asked the support guy why I don't just go buy a PS3, even though I hate Sony and PS3.

I got my 360 and the first damn night I had it I was playing assassin’s creed for 10 mins and it started grinding at first I thought it was my friends pc begin gay... but sadly enough... it was my 360 so now I’ve got to call MS and talk to them about fixing and I swear they better not charge me cause I don’t got no damn money to be wasting on their mistakes.
- My disk drive just died on Friday night. I called 1-800-4myxbox, got some guy on the phone. He actually told me it was normal....I said no way. THen he said it was out of warranty. I couldn't find my receipt so I thought I was screwed...How the hell did he know it was out of warranty?? Looked through all of my stuff, found the receipt. I've only had it 6 months. Called them back, and they're sending me a box for me to send it back to get repaired under warranty.

- Count me in! My 3rd 360 now sounds like the front brakes on a 1972 PACER and will not read any games. Just got off of the phone with support and I dont know why I bothered waisting the 40 minutes. They want me to pay $95-$150 for the repair of the dvd drive of the P.O.S. exchange they had just sent me due to the red "ring of death" failure. Why does this joke of a company have to have all of the good games. Guess I will go by another P.O.S. so my kids arent pissed at the world. Thanks again MICROSOFT.......
- wow i've only had my brand new 360 elite with halo 3 for like 2 days and BAM breaks. i was just playing halo 3 and i hear this weird grinding noise i ignore it cuz i didnt think it was a big deal so i get off go out a little come back i try it and it doesnt read halo i was like omfgwtf!?!?! i hate microsoft
- ok. this happened to my gears of war, rockband and halo 3. it just happened to my halo 3 today and im like freaking out. DONT TILT YOUR XBOX 360 CONSOLE VERTICALLY OR HORIZANTLLY WHILE THE DISC IS IN AND RUNNING!. thats how it makes that scratch the shape of a ring around the disc. and than when u take it out and u see the scratch ,,u r like omg wtf. and than ya putt in back in and it doesnt work. it says it cannot be read. it is bullshit. you can try using a glue stick or a bannana and rub it where the scratch is and stick it in the freezer for like 35 minutes and take it out wipe it off with a cloth that you clean your glasses or computer screen with so it doesnt catch any dirt or whatever because it will scratch it badly if you dont be careful. and wipe it off. and try to put it in the xbox360 console again. and maybe it will work. thats what i read on the internet. good luckkk boyyss
- *Sigh Mine just crash and its 3/3/2008 and I have already sent it in before this, when I talked to Xbox 360 support, they simply told me that there was nothing they could do about it because I didnt have 4 flashing Red Lights but said "if you would like I can take your credit card number for a $100.00 fee so that you may send it in and have it fixed, we dont have you on record as far as sending your Xbox 360 in before." Im fucking pissed, Im working 2 jobs(13 hours a day) and my only day off I go to college. Whata fuckin scam...
- I was playing Smackdown! vs Raw 2008 last night when my Xbox made this horrible grinding noise. I didn't have a clue what it was, and then I reliased it came from my 360. I thought the disk slipped, so I opened the tray and fixed the disc and then put the tray back in and it wouldn't read the disc. I tried all my games, and it recognises none! I'm fucking pissed! Do I lose all my gamerpoints and saves if I send it off to Microsoft for repairs?
- No Jordan, you have to take the hard drive off (on the top) and that will have all your points and save on!

- Wow its been like 3 months since mine started grinding when i put my bonus disc of halo 3 into the drive after playing some halo 3 with a friend on multiplayer. well yah right after it goes in the mega Grindage started i was like OMFG and i had that disc out in like 3 seconds flat let it sit for a bit like 15 mins and then tried putting halo3 in grindage again and then another game same thing by the fourth try the console started spitting out the tray right after i put disc in. so i then tried till it would try grind a bit and then not read disc. I having decent knowledge of hardware with computers and such i took it apart (was allready out of warrenty anyways) so i knew the problem was comming from the CD Drive so i then took that out opened it up cleaned it out and tried again Grindage again!!! so i then looked at all the guizmos inside i don't have the magnet problem made sure no dust or whatever was inside. all good then i noticed the motor that moves the laser reader motor was like burned out (irreplaceable manually) time for a new CD Drive. well out of warrenty and its my birthday on May 18th so why spend my B-day money on a fix when i read all this talk after deciding it was time for research well SCREW that im gonna sell my games and controllers and such on e-bay for SOME money back out of this complete waist of a product i very much enjoyed Gears of war and halo 3 but my god its not worth it to pay every 5 months or less just to have a functional machine. and the wait time they make you go through and lame arse customer support. (granted the cool few) all in all folks my vote goes to PS when i had my ps2 and ps1 never had any problems. my psp's still works fine. i'm gonna flip the bill and buy a ps3 for my birthday gonna cost a lot more than a x-fix but in the long run i think its a wise decision i feel for all you folks with x-boxes i have used them for years. or the original anyways still works FINE but the 360 was made by folks who chip rocks in Siberia for a living as far as i'm conscerned. so i will miss the good old days with Gear of war and such but i'm not rich enough to pay and pay and pay and pay and wait and wait and wait thats asking too much of the product owners so SCREW X-BOX 360 and hopefully they'll spend a lot more time making the next model instead of trying to beat Sony in putting there product in the market before Sony does that was there biggest mistake its not a race to see who lands on the moon first guys. well my RANTING AND RAVING is over had to get all that off my chest ohh and yah i guess that makes me an additional member of the club. god help the consumers with all this horrable feedback.
- I don't know about you guys, but according to what Microsoft employees told me, not only are disc drive issues not covered under warranty, they had the nerve to charge me $140 to look at it (just LOOK at it), then they said they'd send it back with a full report of what the problem is, how it can be fixed and how much it will take. I mean, what the...?
- my 360 disc drive wont stay closed wether theres a disc in the 360 or not, i opened up the 360 and took out the drive, it all looks normal, i even tried to run a game with the drives top cover off, a lil dangerous lol since it gets the disc spinning pretty fast, the disc almost lifted off, and flew out of the drive lol, so im not sure what to do now, was thinking of buying a new 360, then swapping the inner box for the new one then returning it for my cash back lol, but i dunno yet, if anyone knows where theres a new 360 disc drive i can buy please let me know, thanx DA
- The same damn thing happened to me. I went online to request for a repair since my warranty status said it was still good but the website said it couldn't process repairs at the time. I now go back on to see if its working and apparently my warranty has expired but it is now letting me process a repair, interesting that it wouldn't process while I was covered by the warranty. The 3-Year plan is only on the ring of death, anything else you only get a year. When I called Microsoft they tried to blame the issue on the use of an intercooler because its not manufactured or tested by Microsoft. B.S. They want to charge me $100 for the repair on top of the freaking month that it will take to fix there crappy product, and I bought an ELITE so this type of crap wouldn't happen. Thanks Microsoft, thanks for giving such great customer service. I am now glad that I own a PS3
- So yea... I too got that loud horrible grinding noise... all I was doing was watching a movie. I did notice I had it on pause. When I unpaused it the movie kept playing but that loud horrible noise went off... i was scared so i shutdown the console, opened up the CD/DVD tray and took out the DVD movie. Now the tray won't stay closed. When i hit eject, the tray goes in and after 5-6 seconds it pops back out. I had to maneuver it somehow so that it stayed closed. But yea I too called MS Tech Support (by the way are they overseas or something... heavy accent on the girl), and they will send me the packing box and the one month free XBOX Gold Service and all that. I do find it weird that I have to remove my faceplate on the console before I send it it. I never touched the faceplate ever in my life. I even went online to see a video on how to take it off, lol. But yea that's my experience so far. I've had this console for almost 11 months. Good thing it broke now before the warranty was up.
- mine xbox 360 wouldnt close with a game in the drive and then wen there wasnt a game i it it got jamed but i sent it back to get repaired i got it back after 2 weeks and 3 weeks later my disk drive wont open at all and GH 3 is stuck in it

- Guess who's waiting for the Xbox 360 coffin? I was playing Forza 2 when the grinding noise came up! Get this, I was one day away from the end of my warranty. Talk about a lucky strike! I think the heat might be an issue. I never had a problem when it was standing up, it started when I layed the console on its side... Maybe it caused it to overheat and break down... Anyway, what the hell am I supposed to do for the next month? Play outside or somethin'?
- just happened to me too. I put a disc in there andthe xbox just stares back at me. I'm bout to go crawling back to the playsration family. I defected to xbox a year ago. I hope ps3 will forgive me and accept me back. YOU GUYS SHOULD COME OVER TO THE DARK SIDE TOO.
- I am sending in my 7 or 8 xbox360, I think. I say I think because I can't remember how many it has been. I had the original xbox360s which had the 3 red and 2 red light problems, then I got an Elite and my CD drives are taking a dump on me. I think they have probably had my xboxs for about half a year if you take into the consideration how long it takes them to fix these pieces of junk. I wish I could get my money back, but what can one do?
- we messed around with it for while, took it apart and the magnents let go in the cd rom, there are 2 little magnets that need to be glued back on, its a known issue and once this is done it works fine. thats the problem with everyone, the grinding noise stops , if u want more details , email me @ jesseburnsonline@gmail.com
- ok i guess i am just another on the stack of shit the xbox 360 has given us but i think i can help. i have taken apart the 360 and found the name of the maker who makes the game drive and googled it instead of what i thought to find i came across this site http://www.consolesource.com/ecomm/catalog/HL-Data-Storage-GDR-3120L-Xbox-360-DVD-ROM-p-2609.html it says i can buy a new drive for $70. that is a whole lot better then a new 360 or sending it in. and if u do not know how to take the 360 apart g to youtube.com and search how to take apart xbox 360 simple as that
- today iwas playin halo 3 and suddenly a grinding noise started. i took the disc out. no scratches. but now every time i close the tray it just opens again straight away. is there any way other than sending it away to sort it out?
