Jakob says so…

Jakob Nielsen now says design for 1024×768! but develop using liquid layouts that adapt to screen sizes from 800×600 up to 1280×1024.

Great but in all honesty I prefer a web-page to be 800×600. I feel no need for a page to be bigger, much like books work well in paperback size rather than hard back and papers in broad sheet format are annoying.

Basically bigger isn’t always better, and why should I design for bigger than 800×600 just because I can.

However using liquid layouts and CSS we can give users the option and allow them to choose for themselves, that way everyone is happy!

I guess it depends on your users and the content that you need to display on screen. Some sites work really well built for fixed layouts others work well with fluid layout. What’s the point of a cinema display if all the content is squished up in the left hand side or stuck down the middle in a column. Lots of sites make fixed vs fluid a user preference. I think this is a good idea.

Yeah, all about giving your users options. Another plus point for developing with web standards!

Nah… The only way to offer a decent user experience is to use Flash… in a pop up.
